Making Crystals, Day 1

We started a science experiment yesterday. This is one that will take a few days, but we decided to try it anyhow. We are going to make crystals.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup hot! water, 1/3 cup salt, cup, pipe cleaner, and pencil

Method:

1. heat up water

2. dissolve as much of the 1/3 c salt as possible into the water. (I ended up putting the whole thing on the stove and dissolving more of the salt while the water boiled. The I poured it into a different cup than showed here).

3. wrap the pipe cleaner around the pencil and let it sit in the water. Leave it there until all the water is evaporated, and check out the salt crystals that have formed on your pipe cleaner.

The girls both got a chance at helping me dissolve the salt into the water (before I put it on the stove). Note: we also added green food coloring... not quite sure what it will do, but I thought we'd try it out.
Here it is all ready to go.

I checked the apparatus out before going to bed last night, and we already had crystals. I'm excited to see what this looks like after a few days.
