Things they Say...

Melanie

Thanks to the wonderful world of Barbie entertainment (i.e. movies), Melanie was trying to turn into a princess by balancing a book on her head. I decided to give it a go and put a big copy of "Jane Eyre" on my head and proceeded to walk across the room. She was in awe, and then says to me. "Mom, you are the queen. Queens can walk with books on their head too, you know".
****
Melanie: "I'm a maid. Maids help the princesses"
Me: "Maids clean up, are you going to clean?"
Melanie: "I changed into a princess... sorry".
****

Noelle

Me: "Is it Thanksgiving?"
Noelle: "No"
Me: "Then how come I have a little turkey in my house?"
Noelle: "I'm not a turkey. See, I have blonde hair, I'm a Noelle!"
****
Noelle: "Mom, do you want to go to Hawaii?"
Me: "No, I'm making lunch, maybe later"
Noelle: "Okay, I'm going on this horse" (she sits on a rocking horse) "It's a flying horse and it will get me to Hawaii!"
****
Before breakfast, Noelle askes me if she can have a cookie.  When I said no, she says "but they are going to go yucky if we don't eat them, so I am being a good helper.  Please, ma ma."

Random thought...

Brandon and I were cleaning out our office together this past weekend and came across a brief case bag that my mom gave me when I graduated college. It was a really nice, black bag that looked like a bigger version of the purse I had at the time. I remember getting it and thinking it was perfect. It came with a day planner (from my uncle) and a fancy engraven pen (from my little brother). I remember getting it, but I didn't put it to much use. I had Melanie exactly a year after I graduated and had to bring my pump, among other things, to and from work, making the bag a little too much for me.
On Saturday, Brandon picks up the bag and says "This is from the Career Woman Camille time period". I looked up at him with a question mark on my face because I honestly didn't know what he was talking about. Of course I asked him what he meant, and he said that I was the career woman. I was going to take the world over. I told him he was making it up, and he told me that I use to say that I'd never be a stay at home mom, and that I would always work. And then I remembered it. He was right!
When I met Brandon, I told him I wasn't going to get married until I was 28. I wanted to be done with school and have established my career before I got married... 6 weeks later we were engaged and 3 months later we were married. But he was right about my focus on my career. I had it in my head that I would never be able to be a stay at home mom. That would just never be enough for me.
The second I held Melanie in my arms, it all changed. I didn't ever want to go back to work. But alas, I had to, and eventually career Camille was back. Being laid off and being home with her for those weeks before I went to work at NFra is what I think finally fixed me of that forever. I loved my job at Nfra. The people are wonderful there, and I will always appreciate the opportunity they gave me, and especially when I needed it so much (I was supporting the family). Having said that, I went to work every day missing my little girl. I HATED the feeling that someone else was raising her, and eventually them (when Noelle was added to the mix).
Looking back, I don't regret getting my degree. I have fought those feelings, because there was a time that I felt guilty for all the time and money I had felt was wasted if I wasn't using it. I may not be designing irrigation, roads, drainage, or whatever, but my degree is definitely not being wasted at home. Now, I am just so grateful that I can stay home with my kids. Do I enjoy every minute of every day, not really. Is it the easiest job in the world, heck no. But would I take it back, never. I love my children so much. I love being mom, at home, little crazy, with a messy house, giggling, etc. I want my children to know that I may have given up my "career Camille" status, but it was because they were worth it.
*As a side note, I do put "civil engineer - but at home with my kids" on occupation on doctors forms. I know it doesn't matter to them, but I just can't help it.
P.S. It's a good thing Brandon has patience and a sense of humor. ;)
P.S.S. I am in no way trying to make any working moms feel guilty. I have been a working mom when I had to be, and I understand the crazy balance perfectly. I just wanted to get my thoughts out.

First Day of Learning Club Co-op

There is something fun happening, and Noelle is part of it! The Learning Club Co-op started last week! Noelle was really excited about starting Learning Club, learning new things, having her own preschool with her own teachers, and meeting new friends.
And after 2 weeks, she is still loving it! Every day she asks if it is Tuesday yet (that's the day they meet). She loves her new friends and loves having her own preschool that isn't Melanie's. I love that she is becoming her own person.

First Smithson Family Cookoff

We wrapped Labor Day off with the first ever Smithson Family Cook off. The girls drew names for their partners and it was determined that Noelle and I were a team, and Brandon and Melanie were a team (Oliver was a floater and actually napped through most of the competition). For this cook off, we were to make desserts.
Noelle and I made Oreo chocolate chip peanut butter cookie bars (her pick).
Brandon and Melanie made strawberry shortcake.
After we finished making our desserts, it was time for the official judging. Our friend Rebekah and her family of judges did the job nicely. They voted and after careful deliberation determined the strawberry shortcake the winner. Good Job Brandon and Melanie! As the winners, they got to pick the movie at the next family movie party. They picked Shark Tale.

Labor Day, 2012

Labor day is one of my favorite holidays. We always get to celebrate Brandon's birthday over Labor Day... and it's a 3 day weekend in which we get to spend the whole time with him. It really is special.
This first picture was taken by Noelle all by her self out the front window. I didn't even know she had the camera until she gave it back to me. She is pretty talented for a 2 year old.
For our family day, we headed to the Goldfield Mine and Ghost Town. We started out by just walking around and checking everything out. The Ghost Town was like a true ghost town... apparently no one shows up until around 10.
This sign is no lie... that mine tour horn is LOUD. And even warned and ears covered, my kids all cried after it went off.
Clearly it hadn't gone off yet when this picture was taken.
We actually did the tour this time. It was fun. I was really nervous about the idea of going under ground... lets face it, I'm claustrophobic, and being UNDER GROUND just doesn't appeal to me. But I really did enjoy myself.
Some more walking around.
I love this picture of Noelle. I told her to stand still so I could get her picture, and she came running to me.
Look who is awake and enjoying himself!

It was a great day at the mine and ghost town! Happy Labor Day!

36

Brandon had a birthday! Shout Hooray! We love birthdays at our house. It gives us a reason to make hats, decorate, and have fun. I thought these hats were fun!
The party was a polka dot party (I made a bunch of dots and the kids wrote things they love about Brandon on them). We had a fun ice cream bar for dessert. We played games as a family and just had a great time. The party was actually the night before his birthday (Friday Night).
Saturday was his birthday and the fun continued. We started the day with a good breakfast and then headed over to the Science Center. We got to check out the Math Alive exhibit and the new Lego's exhibit. I think the Math Alive exhibit was the best.
It was so much fun. That night, Brandon and I went on a much needed date. It was nice to be just the two of us (we haven't had a "just the two of us date" for over a year).
Happy Birthday to my wonderful husband, whom I love so much.

the dare devil is 9 months old

Oliver is 9 months old, and he is moving around and getting into trouble! (Perhaps not as much trouble as maybe just into things mom didn't realize he could get into).
Oliver really has no fear. He will climb onto anything he can, and when it's time to get down (or off), he seems to think head first is the way to go. I think this scares mom more than it scares Oliver.
Oliver's 9 month stats:
Weight: 16 lbs (off the chart on the low end.)
Height: 26 3/4"
Head: 17 3/4"
He has 1 tooth. He loves to jump on his bed. He loves to eat... and eat... and eat. He can craw, stand, walk assisted. He screams with joy and is quick to smile. He is LOVED
